The 2020 Guide to Social Media Sizes

It’s hard enough to manage multiple social media accounts, without constantly Googling what size you need for your next post.

I mean, there’s so many to keep track of isn’t there? Especially when you post content across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, even YouTube, Pinterest and Tik Tok.

Your content might be top notch, but if the sizing of your social media images is all wrong, your engagement may take a hit.

Why quality social media images matter

By now, you’ve taken the time to create a strong visual identity across all of your channels, both online and off. Your entire brand image is held up by strong imagery, well-designed graphics and the right tone of voice - but these elements can quickly fall flat if you’re not adapting your content for its desired platform.

Planning for the platform

Every social media platform has its own sizing, whether it’s the amount of text you can use or the dimensions of an image. After all, people read things differently between platforms, which makes these formats all the more important.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this does mean creating separate imagery for each social channel. But would you rather a little extra work which can equal in increased engagement, or the same size everywhere with sloppy results?

To make things quicker, Canva is a great tool for social media sizes and keeping your content in one place.

Getting personal with your audience

Image dimensions are not the only thing to consider when you’re planning your content. Social media marketing is about building relationships with your audience, making connections and engaging in a more ‘human’ way than you may have previously done via, say, email.

In order to get the most of your content marketing, you need to ensure that the content your sharing, the text that accompanies your image and the overall message you’re delivering is tailored to its platform.

For example, LinkedIn is strictly professional, while Instagram is quite ‘lifestyle’ orientated.

You wouldn’t post an image of your breakfast on LinkedIn, would you? Not unless you’re following up with a (relatively long winded) caption about business.
